Cranberry cultivars


Ben Lear
  • Selected in 1900, Wisconsin, USA.
  • Slow growing, creeping cranberry cultivar; its rhizomes grow even up to 180 cm long.
  • Blooms in late spring, displays light pink flowers.
  • Gives dark red berries with a little elongated shape, its fruits are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants.
  • They ripen at the end of September; its harvesting time ends at the end of October.
  • Grows well in acidic soil.
  • Needs to be covered for winter.

Early Black
  • Early variety of large-fruit cranberry.
  • Perennial, creeping, evergreen shrub with creeping habit, grows up to 0.1-0.2 m in height; extremely vigorous grower with strong shoots which bear abundant fruit.
  • Its thin, creeping shoots grow up to about 120 cm in length.
  • Boasts evergreen leaves which are light green in colour.
  • Flowers from June to July.
  • Yields berries of medium size, approximately 1 cm in diameter, ball-shaped, orange-red in colour, adorned with a dark red blush (almost black in extremely ripe berries), their flesh is firm but too sour and tart to be eaten raw; however, excellent for any kind of fruit preserves.
  • Gives crop from September to October.
  • Tolerant of half-shaded and sunny positions, prefers moist, humus and acidic soil (pH = 3.2-4.5).
  • Needs to be watered to survive heat waves.
  • Rarely attacked by pests and diseases.
  • USDA hardiness zone 5a.

Howes
  • Bred by Elias Howes in 1843.
  • Vigorous grower which develops long thick creeping sprouts.
  • Displays big dark green leaves.
  • Bears average size berries - 1.8 cm long and 1.6 cm across - with a glossy red skin and firm pulp; its stems are delicate and short which makes harvesting easier.
  • Its fruits ripen in October and keep well, gives high crop.

Mc Farlin
  • Slow grower, develops compact sprouts with short fruit bearing shoots.
  • Gives big fruits - 2.7 cm long, 2.4 cm across - elongated and quite irregular, which displays a glossy dark red skin with a strong wax coating; they are of good processing quality, crunchy and firm.
  • Its berries ripen in the second half of October.
