- A tree from Japan. It grows to a height of 10-12 m. It usually forms single-trunk forms, unlike C. japonicum.
- Young leaves are red-purple in spring, later they turn dark green, and yellow-red in autumn. Leaves are larger than the type. In autumn, after the leaves fall, they give off an intense, sweet fruity scent that spreads throughout the garden, surprising at this time of year.
- Small, inconspicuous, red flowers bloom before the leaves develop.
- It grows best in fertile, humus and fresh soil. It requires moist, even waterlogged soil, a semi-shaded, sheltered position. It tolerates drought poorly, losing its leaves early.
- Quite frost-resistant, it can be planted in almost the entire country, except for regions with extremely severe winters. It can be damaged by May frosts.
