- Develops elevated spreading cone-shape habit, grows up to 2.5 m high and 2m across.
- Produces ornamental dark green leaves which in autumn turn burgundy brown and may be a pride of all gardens.
- Pn spring, it displays melliferous violet flowers with white rims, gathered in elevated thick panicles; they exude an intoxicating fragrance and thrive long in the bush.
- Prefers fertile damp soils with a neutral or slightly acidic pH, does well in half-shade and even in deeply shaded places but thrives best in full sun.
- Used for solitary and mass plantings.
- Cold-hardy down to -32°C.
