Olbrzym z Halle (Hall’s Giant)

Corylus avellana

In production:

  • It is a German variety of hazel cultivated since the end of the 18th century. She was selected by C. H. Buttner from Halle.
  • One of the most popular varieties of hazel.
  • It grows strongly, produces a wide and spreading crown. It grows up to 4-6 m high.
  • Produces large to medium-sized, cone-shaped fruits that are not very uniform in size. Nuts rarely fall out of the cover, usually they fall with it in whole clusters, 5-12 in one cluster.
  • Compared to other varieties of hazel, it is less frequently attacked by pests.
  • Most hazel varieties are cross-pollinating to a greater or lesser extent and therefore need the presence of another hazel as a pollinator for this variety. They grow best when planted in groups. The pollinators for the Halle variety are Barcelona and Cosford.
  • Totally cold hardy.
