- An evergreen shrub with a broad, domed shape. After 10 years, it grows to approximately 50 cm in height and 80 cm in width.
- The leaves are dark green, shiny, and small, 3 cm long.
- The flowers are numerous, bright carmine red, 5.5 cm in diameter. It blooms profusely in mid-May.
- It prefers partial shade and average, moderately moist garden soil with an acidic pH.
- It is readily planted in home gardens, but also in parks, rock gardens, and heathlands.
- It requires winter protection and sheltered locations.
